What you need to start
Everything you need for your first project, and nothing you don't. Your first loom is a piece of cardboard.
Starter kit
01Pin loom, 4 in.A small square frame ringed with pins. Most come with a long weaving needle.
02Worsted weight yarn, 2 or 3 colorsSmooth and light-colored, so you can see every row.
03Sturdy cardboardA 6 x 8 in. piece from a box. Your first loom.
04Tapestry needleBig eye, blunt tip. Carries the yarn over and under.
05A wide-tooth comb or a forkPushes each row down snug against the last.
06ScissorsFor cutting yarn and cardboard.
07Ruler and pencilMarks the notches on the cardboard loom.
08Masking tapeHolds the ends of the warp on the cardboard.
The manual tells you what to look for when you buy each one.
- 1Pulling the yarn too tightA tight row pulls the edges in, and your square turns into an hourglass. Lay each row in a gentle hill, then press it down.
- 2Over-under in the wrong orderEach row goes under where the last one went over. If two rows match, the yarn just slides out. Check the start of every row.
- 3A loose, uneven warpThe warp threads are the backbone. Wrap them snug and even, or the cloth comes out wavy.
